Mapengo yanasababisha madhara makubwa kiafya zaidi ya lile wanaloliona wengi la kupunguza uzuri wa muonekano wa mtu. Hata hivyo, kama utamuona daktari wako katika muda sahihi na kujadiliana la kufanya kuhusu pengo/mapengo yako na kuyaziba na kupata tiba sahihi, unaweza kutunza afya ya kinywa chako kwa kiwango cha juu kwa muda mrefu sana.

Pia jino lililopo juu au chini ya pengo hilo huanza kurefuka bila kipimo litapoachwa kwa muda mrefu.
3. Mabadiliko ya muundo wa uso: muonekano wa uso wako unategemea mpangilio wa meno yako kwa kiasi kikubwa sana. Ukiwa na pengo kwa muda mrefu sana, misuli ya uso inaanza kupinda na kusababisha mabadiliko ya muonekano wa sura yako, jambo linaloweza kusababisha usijiamini tena.
4. Kuvurugika kwa ratiba yako muda wowote: pengo huweza kusababisha maumivu makali sana yanayodumu kwa muda mrefu kwakuwa meno yaliyobaki yanayokinzana nayo wakati wa kutafuna. Meno yaliyobaki yanaweza kuanza kurefuka na kuharibu fizi za upande wa pili na kukusababishia maumivu. Hali hii ikiendelea kwa muda mrefu itasababisha maumivu sugu ya kichwa.
5. Kuongeza mzigo kwa meno yaliyo karibu na pengo hilo: binadamu tuna meno 32 na kila jino lina kazi yake maalumu, kama meno ya mbele yamechongoka kuliko mengine. Kazi yake ni kukata au kumega, ndio maana yapo mbele kabisa mdomoni. Meno haya yapo nane, manne kwenye taya la juu na manne chini.
Haya ni meno unayotumia kumega na kukata vitu unavyokula. Meno yenye ncha kali ndio aina nyingine. Haya ndio meno makali zaidi na yana kazi ya kunyofoa chakula kigumu kukata. Meno yanayofuata yanatumika kutafuna na kusaga chakula.
Endapo jino moja tu litakosekana, kazi zake zote itabidi zifanywe na meno yaliyo karibu yake, jambo litakalosababisha meno hayo kuharibika haraka na kirahisi sana kwakuwa yanafanya kazi kubwa sana na kazi ambayo haikuwa yake kuifanya.
6. Matatizo ya kuongea na kutafuna: ni wazi kabisa kwamba unapokuwa na pengo utapata tabu kung’ata chakula. Watu wengi hawajui kuwa mapengo huathiri pia jinsi ya kuongea jambo linaloweza kukusababishia fedheha na aibu na kukupotezea uwezo wa kujiamini. Baada ya muda mrefu, mfumo wa usagaji wa chakula inaathiriwa kwakuwa huwezi kutafuna chakula vizuri.
7. Kutanuka kwa matundu ya pua: hii hutokea hasa hasa unapokuwa na pengo la meno ya nyuma kwenye taya la juu. Hili likitokea, matundu ya pua ambayo pia yapo upande wa juu kinywani huweza kutanuka na kuharibu taya la juu.
